Becky. Within the nine years or so in which you’ve taught me piano, I must say it has come a long way. With my 20th birthday approaching, I have known you for pretty much half my entire life. What is there you don’t know about me? Learning from you has been pretty much a lifelong trip. Your style of teaching – listen to the student, talk to them, and hopefully they learn – is simple yet effective. Over the years, I have gotten to know you almost like a sister. Even though I am no longer a student of yours, it is impossible to forget the times we’ve spent together, from the days when we sat and talked at your home, to the days we went out for a long run. I clearly remember your face the first time I met you when I was still very young – I swear you haven’t aged a bit! You haven’t changed either; you’ve always had a blunt and imaginative personality. You were more than just a piano teacher – now you are a friend.

I am delighted to have an opportunity to write a little article for Becky’s Yuan web site.

When I look back to evaluate the progress among thousands of music students I taught – Becky could fit into the top 10 best category. It is not because she was my pupil for 10 years, it is not because she was not afraid to travel 60 Km for music lessons – it is because she has made stunning success in her professional development into a Great Teacher as she is now.

Becky is always curious in finding new ways to the most expressive, convinced interpretation of music she learned, to conquer the most technically and musically difficult pieces written for piano without sacrifice of quality. She loves music and in one of regular Leon’s Studio recitals she performed with my other student Mr. David Story selected works from Classic music, jazz and live improvisation on the theme given from the audience – all on two pianos! In her teaching practice Becky is implementing her knowledge of old and newest methods in piano pedagogy and her students are showing good results in getting through all piano playing difficulties with ease and enjoying the music to the fullest extent.

Becky is a very kind, caring person and good in organising charity concerts where her students are exploring other ways to share their love to music inspired by their teacher with audience and benefitting from that “Human Touch” experience.

And again, as I look back into my teaching experience I feel satisfied and privileged working with such a gifted musician.

Becky was my piano teacher for Grade 4 and Grade 6 piano. Even though it was a short 2 years lesson with her, it was really inspiring and fun. Her passion for music is admirable. That passion made the music she played alive.

Her joyful attitude towards her teaching made the lessons meaningful and enjoyable. I remember when I was choosing pieces to play for each level, she would sight read the entire book for me so I can choose which one I like. I am always amazed by her sight reading skills.

Even though she is only playing through for me to listen, she plays each piece as though if she is in a concert. Becky understands and cares for her students. In her world, the RCM exam or a high mark is never the focus. She is always chasing after the soul of the music.

Even though I no longer studies piano with her, her enthusiasm will always encourage me, not only in piano, but also as I continue to journey through my life.

Becky is not only an amazing teacher, but also a strong mentor.

Teaching three of my siblings for three years, they passed several advanced level piano exams. Not only that, my siblings have grown and learned much more than music.

Becky has always been there to support us – even when my siblings were no longer taking lessons from her. She has always been more than a teacher to my siblings and me, and even more so a good role model.
